Delmar Rodney Baker, 76, of Plainview, Texas passed away on Tuesday, May 23, 2023. Cremation arrangements are under the care of Kornerstone Funeral Directors of Plainview, Texas.

Delmar was born on August 21, 1946 in Laredo, Texas to Kenneth Charles Baker and Viola Marie Green.

Delmar served in the Army from 1966 – 1968 in Fort Hood where he was put in charge of the motor pool for all the mechanized machinery.

After the military he started building homes through his brother-in-law contractor in Baton Rouge.  He then began working for himself, as a contractor building homes in the Hollis, Oklahoma area for six years.

At the age of 30 in 1976, Delmar gave his heart to Christ and as His disciple began serving as preacher in a country Baptist Church at Vinson north of Hollis while building homes and a family.  Delmar moved to Pearland, TX with his then wife and son, Joshua, continuing to build homes.

Delmar first started prison ministry in 1983 out of the local church he attended in Pearland, TX.  He was involved in prison ministry ever since.  He spent two stints as a missionary to Belize in Central America and was called back to the Plainview area in 2012 to specifically minister in the prisons there where he spent the last 9 years.  Delmar became a Certified Chaplain Volunteer Assistant (CVCA) at the Wheeler and Formby Units at Plainview where he taught many classes and preached many sermons and was gifted with being able to reach the often unreachable.

Delmar was a man who never met a stranger, was an amazing storyteller, and always had the best jokes to make you laugh.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Charles (Charlie) and Marie and his brother Kenneth (Kenny) Baker.

He is survived by his son, Joshua Greenberry Baker and wife Ana-Maria Baker of Haslet, Texas, his sisters Charlotte Lawton of Kerrville, TX and half-sister Gwyneth Hill of Woodward, OK.  He also leaves behind 7 nieces and nephews, Lisa D’Arcy of Kerrville, TX, Hammond Lawton of Birmingham, MI, Fred Lawton of Houston TX, Kerry Baker of Sealy, TX, Kelly Paull of Kingwood, TX, Keith Baker of Clifton, TX, and Kenneth Baker of Georgetown, SC along with many cousins and great nieces and nephews.

Delmar’s wishes were to have his remains spread in one of his favorite places to fish, San Luis Pass. An ash scattering ceremony will be held for family and friends at a later date.
