Having known Jim Phillips not only through high school, but many of the years following, I know that he was a rescuer...he came to the rescue of many, many, many students as well as adults...He was a kind and gentle man as well as a tough and rugged man...But most of all, he was a Dearly Loved Man by so very many...We will miss you, Jim Phillips...now go and REST IN PEACE...

Personally, I luckily never had to be "rescued" by Mr. Phillips...I think it was mostly the guys in our class...If you were one of the many students that Mr. Phillips "rescued" in one way or another, PlEASE tell your story below...(and come to think of it, I'm sure he "rescued" me a time or two from Mr. Slade!!!)

I always called him Coach Phillips.  Back in 1963 when I was a sophomore, I had him as a teacher.  I forgot what it was, but he at that time was either a tennis coach or assistant to one of the head coaches.  As the years went by, I'd see him at various events in Freeport.  He was sincere in his beliefs and was likeable as a person.  RIP Coach Phillips.

I never had Mr. Phillips for a teacher but I did buy my first car (1953 Ford) from him in January of 1965.  It cost $225 if I remember correctly and he let me pay it off over a 6 month period.  It was a dependable car.

I spent a lot of my mis-guided youth in the Twenty Century Club (Freeport poolhall) and Mr. Phillips also frequented the establisment.  I thought that was pretty cool!  Rest in peace Mr. Phillips.
