James Aubrey (Jim) May Sr. passed peacefully into the arms of the Lord on November 28, 2010.

Jim was born in San Antonio, Texas, on May 13, 1919, son of Edith Gertrude King May and Frederick Harrison May.

Jim was predeceased by his beloved wife, June Deline May; his father, Fred May; his mother, Edith King May Poston; his step-father, Joe Poston; his older brother, Fred May Jr.; and his younger brother, Dr. Henry May.

He is survived by his three children, Jim May Jr. and wife Jane of Lake Jackson and Austin, Texas (grandchildren Alan May and wife Molly, Chris May and wife Danielle (great-grandchildren Grant, Tyler and Elizabeth), and Lisa May and fiance (Colton Hester), John May and wife Millicent Valek of Lake Jackson, Texas (grandchildren Jennifer May and John May, Jr.), and Rebecca May Smith and husband Terry of Midland, Michigan (grandchildren Jennifer Hamp and husband Todd (great-grandchildren John and Steven Fischer, Britnee and Megan Hamp), and Philip Smith and wife Michelle Swantek (great-grandchildren Haley and Mikayla Smith and Katlynn Swantek).

Jim attended public school and San Antonio Junior College in San Antonio, Texas. He graduated from the University of Texas in 1940 with a BS Degree in Chemical Engineering and honorary memberships in Phi Lambda Epsilon Chemistry Society and Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honorary Society. At a later date he received a Masters Degree in Chemical Engineering for which he received membership in the Sigma Xi Honorary Membership for Research.

Jim worked in the Styrene plant of Dow Chemical Company’s Texas Division from 1940 until 1963, with a three-month assignment in Australia in 1961. He then transferred to the Midland Division where he worked in Process Engineering and as a Process Consultant. He retired in 1982 after 42 years of faithful service.

Jim married June Deline of Midland, Michigan on August 31, 1941. They lived first in Freeport, Texas, then in 1943 became among the pioneering residents of Lake Jackson, Texas. Jim served on the Lake Jackson planning commission prior to serving 14 years on the City Council, from 1949 to 1963. He also served as President of the Lake Jackson Junior High School PTA. Jim was an outspoken proponent for a community college in the area, so much that he arranged for the University of Houston to offer an extension center at Brazosport High School where he then taught several math classes in the early 1950’s. He was proud that Brazosport College is now a thriving part of the community.

In Lake Jackson, Jim was a member of First United Methodist Church where he sang in the choir and served on the building committee. In Midland he was active in Homer United Methodist Church, East Ashman Church of God and most recently, Chapel Lane Presbyterian Church. He was an avid supporter of the musical programs and enjoyed singing in the choir at each. While at East Ashman Church of God, Jim and June established an endowed scholarship at Anderson University’s ministerial program.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that charitable donations be made to Brazosport College in Lake Jackson, Texas, Chapel Lane Presbyterian Church, Midland, Michigan, or Homer United Methodist Church, also in Midland.

A memorial service is planned for Wednesday, December 15, 11:00 a.m. at Chapel Lane Presbyterian Church, Midland, Michigan. Interment will be in Homer Township Cemetery in Midland, Michigan. A second memorial service will be held at a later date in Lake Jackson, Texas. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the care of the Ware Smith Woolever Funeral Directors.
