In Memory

Cathy Hudgins (Gray)

Cathy Hudgins (Gray)

Cathy Ann Gray, age 75, of Kyle, Texas passed away on Saturday, July 9, 2022 surrounded by her loved ones.

Cathy was born January 23, 1947 in Lake Jackson, Texas to Imogene Ruth Hudgins and Clay Milton Hudgins. She graduated from Brazosport High School in 1965 where she made many lifelong friends with whom she remained in contact throughout her lifetime. She attended Sam Houston State University where she was an Art Major and a member of Alpha Chi Omega sorority. After college she moved to Austin where she met Lester Gray. The two were married in 1973 and they were blessed with 3 beloved children. Cathy was a very fun and involved mother. So much so, that she became a surrogate mother to many of her children’s friends over the years who lovingly referred to her as “Momma Gray.” She dedicated her life to loving and investing in her children and eventually her grandchildren. She had a wonderful laugh, too many friends to count, and a strong inner circle that she protected fiercely. Cathy loved people and never met a stranger. She enjoyed visiting with others and blessed many by making anyone she met feel special. Adventurous in the kitchen, Cathy was a wonderful cook and enjoyed trying and sharing new recipes.

Cathy worked in outside sales for over 20 years and also made time to volunteer at Laguna Gloria Art Museum for many years. Additionally, she enjoyed being a regular volunteer at her children’s elementary school. Cathy’s life was not without adversity, yet she faced it with strength and selflessness and always kept a smile on her face.

She is survived by the father of her children, Lester Gray; son, Clay Gray; daughter, Rebecca Gillespie; son in law, Isaac Gillespie; daughter, Catherine Gray; granddaughters, Harper, Jillian, and Eva Gillespie, Niece Shelley Lasater, Nephew Mark Brandenburg and wife Cristy Brandenburg; her 2 yellow labs, Bishop and Whitley; her granddog, Hagar; and many extended family members and friends.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Imogene Ruth Hugdins; father, Clay Milton Hudgins; sister, Rebecca Brandenburg; and aunt, Thelma Hudgins. Honorary Pallbearers are Lester Gray, Clay Gray, Isaac Gillespie, Shep Gump, Freeman Hart, and Dick Hudgins

Services will be held on Thursday, July 21st, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. at Weed Corley Fish Funeral Home, 5416 Parkcrest Dr. Austin, TX 78731. The family will receive visitors starting at 1:00 p.m. prior to the service. Burial will be held on Friday, July 22, 2022 at 2:00 at the Gray family cemetery on Ranch Road 501 in Cherokee, Texas.

In lieu of flowers, please donate directly to funeral expenses through the funeral home, or to Hospice of Austin who lovingly cared for Cathy during her final days.

I first met Cathy in 5th or 6th grade.  Remember in Junior High that she was so attractive and athletic.  Voted for her for cheer leader.  There were only a few classes that I shared with Cathy in Junior High and do not remember having any classes in High School.  Cathy was always friendly to me and that was something I never forgot....that and that smile and laugh....what a laugh when you hit her "Funny Bone"...it was infectious...sometimes there were tears.  Did not see Cathy for a few years after High School.  I remember seeing her in Austin with some of her friends...that had to be late 60's.  Cathy was a hoot to be around....never a dull time that is for sure.  RIP my friend.
