Cheryl Smith Jobes, a resident of Leander, Texas, passed away on Thursday, February 22, 2024 at St. David’s Hospital in Austin. Cheryl was born on August 19, 1947 in Columbus, Ohio. Her mother was Phala Mae Cannon Smith and her father was Robert Folger Smith. The family came to Texas when Cheryl was a small child and lived in Lake Jackson. Cheryl graduated from Brazosport High School. Her younger brother, Dain Folder Smith and his family now live in Lufkin. Cheryl raised two sons whom she loved dearly, Robert Lawrence Kosta of Austin and David Folger Kosta of Westminster, Colorado.

On April 17, 2004 Cheryl married Harold D. Jobes, a retired employee of the State and a Burnet County rancher. She adored Harold D’s two sons, Brian Noble and Samuel Shelby Jobes and cherishing time with their children, John Dylan, Jack Patrick and Wyatt Noble Jobes.

Cheryl received her undergraduate and a master’s degree from Stephen F. Austin State University, and also received an Education Administration and Curriculum Certification from the University of Texas. She started her career as a teacher, was an assistant principal, and was then employed as the principal for Pond Springs Elementary School in the Round Rock Independent School District. Cheryl was instrumental in writing an application and preparing Pond Springs to become a “National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence.” Cheryl and her school were recognized for this achievement in a ceremony in Washington D.C. The First Lady of Texas, Laura Bush came to Cheryl’s school and read to the students. Cheryl was praised by her teachers. One teacher remembers that “Cheryl trusted us to do our job and didn’t micromanage. She saw the pains and humor in our daily experiences and trusted us to do our job”. On retiring as the principle of Ponds Springs Elementary, Cheryl was employed for several years by Texas State University as an adjunct Instructor of Education at their Round Rock Campus.

Cheryl was a loving wife, loving mother, and the pleasures in her life were family, children and world travel. In her travels over the years she visited many European and several Asian countries bringing home interesting stories and experiences. She always looked forward to taking her grandchildren to movies and enjoyed spending time on the Marble Falls ranch. She loved nature, the wildlife and at times helped her husband Harold D work cattle. Cheryl is a member of Hope Presbyterian Church in Austin, had been a member of North West Austin Rotary and belonged to her professional associations.

A Celebration of Cheryl’s life will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 16, 2024, at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home located at 1200 South Bagdad Road in Leander, Texas. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Cheryl’s favorite charity was St. Jude Children’s Hospital that cares for children with cancer.
